Guy Fawkes Night
In 1534 the
Roman Catholic Church was very important in England but king Henry VIII of
England divorced from his wife, because she could not have children, and he married
another woman. The Catholics did
not permit to get divorced. So he
decided to separate the England
form the Roman Catholic Church establishing the Church of England with Henry VIII himself at its head.
In 1605 James I passed laws against Catholics. A group of Catholics planned to blow up the Parliament in
London organizing a plot on 5 November. They put some explosive under the Parliament
foundations in London. Guy Fawkes, the leader of the plot, was found under the
Palace of Westminster with the explosive and taken to the king.
After torturing
him, Guy Fawkes and seven men from the plot were hanged. This event is still
celebrated throughout UK on the 5th of November and it is known
as the Guy Fawkes Night.
