Here's another example of summarizing a text employing comic strips (extrasemiotic mediation). Asking the students to draw a picture out of a reading can be a good opportunity for them to read the text many times and, for us teachers, an alternative way to evaluate their competences. 

Mediation

Hi there,

last year I taught in an evening course for adults near where I live. Once, for the English classes, we read a text about the death of John Lennon. The students had to understand the reading activity by answering a set of questions first. Afterwards, students practised their speaking skills as well. As a post activity, I asked them to summarise the text in a written form.  Since I knew that a student was very good at drawing comics, I asked him to summarise the story in his own special way.  And this is the result! Do you like it?

Pestalozzi programme

There are quite a lot of good reasons to attend in-service  courses. Teaching requires, in fact, a constant updating of one’s own expertise. Pestalozzi  is a Council of Europe  programme  for the professional development of teachers and education actors.  Participants  are offered the opportunity to attend interesting developing courses within any of the Signatory States to the European Cultural Convention.  This month last year, I was given the chance to attend a 4-day seminar in Cyprus. The organizers of this  seminar asked us - the participants,  to prepare a presentation of ourselves. Check out mine, Buona lettura, Marco
